Album Review: THE SHINS

Album reviews by ACID
Artiste: The Shins
Album: Port of Morrow
Label: Aural Apothecary/Columbia/Sony Music

I’VE been listening to too much crap on the radio. That’s about the only thought that ran through my head after I had a first listen to Port of Morrow, the latest album by the Albuerquerque, New Mexico band The Shins.

Fronted by vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter James Mercer, The Shins has had a nine year history that is sometimes meandering but has never failed to dull. The details of all that are plonked onto reference sites, but for this album itself was released through the talented Mercer’s Aural Apothecary label.

The Shins’ history has seen the entry and exits of various musicians, and this time around Port of Morrow features Jessica Dobson, Richard Swift as fellow songwriters, drummer Joe Plummer (formerly of Modest Mouse) and the Crystal Skulls’ Yuuki Mathews. Yet through it all, you still have the funniest, faintest idea that sometimes, The Shins should’ve just been called Jimmy Mercer & The Band – he dominates through the entire 10-track album that much.

Jaded and autumnal at times, wistful but never earnest, Port Morrow’s songs contain well-crafted lyrics and simple though impressionable melodies that linger with you long after the song has ended, right from the dirty-bass’ed opener The Rifle’s Spiral itself.

Together with the dark honey of Mercer’s vocals, the lyrics however, are pointed, mildly galling, which makes an interesting juxtaposition between melody and words. Here’s an example: in No Way Down, Mercer sings “Out beyond the western squalls in an alien land they work for nothing at all, they don’t know the mall or the lay-away plan”.

Over and all, this is not the kind of album that grabs you immediately but lures you and lulls you into loving them – but loving them for the long term. And why did I write  I’d been listening to too much crap on the radio? Well, when you come across material like Port of Morrow, the difference is as stark as it can be, and is a truly sweet reminder of what else is out there. This is actually my first introduction to The Shins but I think the acquaintance will be a long one.

Album Review - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

Album reviews by ACID
Artiste: BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
Album: Wrecking Ball
Label: Columbia/Sony Music

WHAT do we say next of America’s favourite working class hero, Bruce Springsteen? He’s sung all the gritty tales of hard knocks, rough living, gruffer emotions for so long. Even more so in the shadow of the fading of the American dream for so many living there, Springsteen’s songs become all the more touching, all the more poignant.

Wrecking Ball opens with the unapologetic-ally jangly, prideful We Take Care of Our Own. But upon listening closely, you get the feeling that a grim layer of strength and fortitude runs through the entire album like a fine underlying thread (as they do for many of his efforts). The second track is truly the one that opens to a wonderful panoply matching lyrics of the hardy, working man and some unexpected pairings – a hearty fiddle in Easy Money and a rather down-home foot stomp-er Shackled and Drawn.

Jack of All Trades is sorrowful, moving – and all beautiful. Springsteen’s vocals lose no power and retains the full gamut of masculine emotion. “We stood the drought, now we’ll stand the flood”,” he sings, and the listener bears the weight of the full honesty of his delivery. Death to my Hometown, again, is another interesting juxtaposition – all the woes of the grittiest of the hoi polloi but put in a gruff, brave (oh, how brave) delivery that is rousing and inspiring.

The late Clarence Clemmons, the saxophonist of the E Street Band is specially featured in a heartfelt Land of Hope and Dreams as well. Springsteen also pays fond tribute to his old friend and fellow musician at the end.

Look out for two bonus tracks, Swallowed up (In the Belly of the Whale), which is not a pseudo-Jonah-esque paean but rather, almost part dirge and part hymn, of the loss of innocence and confidence, even as it clings on to the faintest of hopes.

Wrecking Ball is another winner,  and perhaps one of Springsteen’s strongest albums about modern urban Americana ever.  It’s unapologetic, grim, tough, honest. And completely gorgeous.

Album Review – REBECCA FERGUSON

Album reviews by ACID
Artist: REBECCA FERGUSON
Album: Heaven
Label: RCA/Syco Music/Sony Music

WHEN the then-legal secretary Rebecca Ferguson first showed up on the television screens via the British singing competition The X Factor in 2004, her musical debut was relatively uneventful and cut short by a lack of confidence. Six years later, she went into the competition again, this time stronger,  refreshed and with guns blazing. She impressed the judges so much with her smoky, mildly gravelly voice that she became the first woman in the show’s history to be the runner-up, losing to Matt Cardle.

Shortly after, Ferguson signed with Cowell/Sony Music (why does it seem that Simon Cowell gets his claws on just anything that remotely seems to make money before anyone else does?) and Heaven is her first full-length album.

Heaven features songs Ferguson has co-written with a host of others. Fairly stylishly executed, the first praiseworthy note is that her voice, which has been described by UK’s The Telegraph as “somewhere between a less annoying Macy Grey and less squeaky Minnie Riperton”, takes true centrestage in all its soulful, heartfelt eagerness.  Frankly, I couldn’t find any Riperton in her vocals, but thought she compared more to a weaker, sandier and younger version of Aretha Franklin though perhaps with less sonorous power.

The content of her songs deal with nitty-gritty rather than gloss – of worry, unemployment lines, complicated emotional mixes and relationships that are special in all of their messed up tangles. The third track Shoulder to Shoulder, has Ferguson keening in earnestness, “So I’m gonna drag you down, whilst you drag me down / And I’m gonna shout at you, whilst you shout at me / Until we realize that real love is free, free.”

There are also more playful musical treatments, like the relaxed, semi-disco of Fairytale (Let me Live my Life This Way), and Mr Bright Eyes, whose whimsical tempo and cleanly innocent lyrics are all about pure, joyful yearning. Fighting Suspicions is a big favourite for me, with a strong melodic line with equally muscular lyrics, archly delivered with emotion and precision by her vocals.

But then the songs themselves clearly carry a weight of meaning for her, whether it’s the punchy R&B wisdom of Glitter & Gold, the fragile optimism driving the disco groove of Fairytale or the swirling melodic confusion of Shoulder to Shoulder’s gripping portrait of dysfunctional love.

Ferguson is credited on every song, most of which are co-written with Eg White, a collaborator who helped bring out the best in Adele and Duffy. Ferguson is in the same Brit-soul terrain, a retro sound made commercially viable by Amy Winehouse, but doesn’t really sound like any of them. She sounds like herself.

All in all, not a bad first album at all.

Album Review - JOE BROOKS

Album reviews by ACID
Artist: JOE BROOKS
Album: A Reason to Swim
Label: Columbia/Sony Music

THE British singer/songwriter and musician Joe Brooks got his debut as a MySpace musician. In the manner that befits lucky amateurs who go viral online via social networks or video clips, Brooks released two independent EPs and was named UK’s top unsigned artiste by 2008. A doubtful sort of moniker, perhaps, but he also garnered an impressive 11 million song plays.

A Reason to Swim is Brooks’ second album, following the debut Constellation Me in 2010. This one is said to be independent and fan-funded (which is always an interesting study in how far he departs from the first ‘commercial’ sound).  I always appreciated moves like this because it is a true study of how autonomous a recording artiste can be, in the songs that are crafted and the new styles that are eked out.

Musically, A Reason to Swim does have a series of hits and misses. The six-track album starts off with a pall for me, with an odd sense of repetitiveness between OK and Green Eyes (the first and third track respectively), which really don’t offer anything in terms of what is either impressive or memorable.

I Find the Light in You is a song about relationship redemption and personal salvation, and there will undoubtedly be a lot of comparisons with Coldplay’s superstar vocalist Christ Martin (in singing chops) in Holes Inside. This song, together with My Heart Will Wait, could’ve easily been mistaken for an early-ish Coldplay tune but they are also surprisingly the two most gorgeous tracks in the album.

Brooks, who managed a quietly successful transition to the United States as well, has enough of international fans in Asia that he was able to sign with Sony Music in Korea and Malaysia – I think his fans by and large won’t be disappointed. There were some which were off the mark for me, but the gems he had in this effort really shone.

Album Review - Foster The People

Album reviews by ACID
Artist: FOSTER THE PEOPLE
Album: Torches
Label: Columbia/Sony Music

FOSTER THE PEOPLE brings out shine, sparkle, pizzazz and a funny brand of street cred and emo-guy earnestness in their first album. This relatively new Los Angeles, California indie pop-rock band made up of Mark Foster (vocals, keyboards, piano, synthesizers, guitar, programming, percussion), Cubbie Fink (bass and backing vocals) and Mark Pontius (drums, extra percussion) have been making their presence felt across local and international airwaves with Pumped Up Kicks, which went viral in 2010 and catapulted the group to speedy stardom.

Overall, Torches has a style that very lightly glances over various genres. It is melodic and rhythmic but it has a soft, approachable pleasant pace and equally likeable lyrics, backed by lashes of 80s style synthesizing.

Torches is one of those albums that strikes the public oddly – and while we can all argue there is no accounting for taste – the second song, Pumped Up Kicks (which has the oddest lyrics – a shiny happy tune with lyrics that hint about bullets and a pumped up shotgun!) really pales in comparison to a number of tracks.

The third track, Call It What You Want, is far and away stronger in tone and more memorable in lyrics, aided with a disco beat. I Would Do Anything For You is gentle, lightly nostalgic ballad that show promise – that Foster the People are able to go deeper that the shiny-happy-people kind of feel they project through the majority of their songs. I also particularly loved Houdini, with synth lines, an 80s inspired introspective feel, from the croony vocals to the jouncy beat.

It would be interesting to listen to subsequent albums from this band – Foster the People is one of those you have the funny feeling may be about to embark on an interesting musical journey, despite a first album of hits and misses.

Album Review-KELLY CLARKSON

Album reviews by ACID

Artist: KELLY CLARKSON
Album; Stronger
Label: Columbia/Sony Music

I‘VE  always had a faulty tendency to just watch American Idol for its entertainment value (which is questionable at times), but after seeing the title awarded to the winner, fail to follow up with what happens post-Idol. Sometimes, it feels like Idol winners enjoy their extended 15 minutes of fame, but there are a few whose longevity withstands a short-term test of time. Chief of this, and possibly the most is the country star Carrie Underwood, followed by Texan-born Kelly Clarkson and arguably, Adam Lambert.

Clarkson has that kind of sleek muscularity to her voice that is quite taking, and suggests that she would do proper justice to a rock album, but still has yet to come up with one. Stronger is her fifth studio album, and it resonates with its strong pop melodic lines, slick yet sensitive execution and a definite sense that she has come into her own as a professional singer and most importantly, she sings like she feels comfortable in her skin, more than ever.

Stronger largely contains survival songs, most of them well-crafted power ballads, which she ably belts out, from the first two tracks, the hits Mr Know It All and What Doesn’t Kill You onwards. One gem that needs kudos is the third track, Dark Side, which she delivers with punchiness and earnest emotion that lingers in the brain and ear well after the track is done. The War is Over is another guitar-driven, rhythmic noteworthy piece.

Containing a whopping 17 tracks (four of them are bonus tracks, one featuring American Idol former judge Kara diGuardi in The Sun Will Rise and country singer Jason Alden in the wonderful duet Don’t You Wanna Stay), this should be a must-have for any Clarkson fan. All things aside, it’s a strong pop album, and much better than a lot of what her contemporaries are putting out. Don’t miss it!

Album Review - Leonard Cohen

Album reviews by ACID

Artist: LEONARD COHEN
Album: Old Ideas
Label: Columbia/Sony Music

HAVING been a longtime fan of the Canadian singer-songwriter-poet-famous Buddhist Leonard Cohen, I look forward to his work with a measure of anticipation. Cohen’s biggest strength, it is often successfully argued, is his version of the written word.

Right off the bad, the material in Old Ideas, while it almost seems to project different nuances of Cohen through the different phases of his creative career, is not a let-down. This album is also his first in seven years. Growled, whispered, spoken and sung in intervals in that scratchy, decadent baritone, the songs are about the subject he knows the best – himself. This is apparent from the beginning itself in the first track Going Home, when he starts off with “I love to speak to Leonard / He’s a sportsman and a shepherd”, all wryness, quiet and grim wit.

Present in the album, too, are familiar tools – mildly repetitive lines (which are always deliberate), found in Going Home and Amen (which sounds like that other paean Hallelujah). Darkness is a sultry ode to pure temptation, cunningly put in an organ-and-Southern blues-hook combination. Banjo, is another one of those unexpected pleasures, and you know that outright when you find yourself tapping your feet to lines like “It’s a broken banjo bobbing / on the dark infested sea”.

Whether he is sly, humorous, despairing, intimate, the songs seem to present a deeply personal side to Cohen’s life and work. And considering how he continues to fascinate critics and fellow musicians, it is wholly justified.

Anyone listening for that pleasant hook and arresting vocal ability will never truly find that in any Cohen album – he maintains that gritty and gaunt edge and slips effortlessly into the stance of the poetic, haunted, emotionally resonant troubadour. At the grand old age of 78, the one who brought classics like Song of Bernadette, Famous Blue Raincoat and Marianne still shines through the medium he knows so intimately and so well.

A real treat, this, and one worth listening to again and again.

AFROJACK
NICK ven de Wall developed a love for music since he was very young, playing the piano when he was only five years old and spending most of his time while studying listening to musc from every genre. It came as no surprise when he started making music instead of just listening to them.

After finishing school, he decided to pursue his musical career but he was unable to make a living out of it. So he worked part time in bars and did catering to add to his income. The experience gave him the exposure to Rotterdam’s club scene, starting his first night out at Las Palmas when he was only 16 years of age. After these, many club nights, side jobs, DJ gigs and a lot of studio time followed. Afrojack’s program of choice is the Fruity Loops, which he discovered at the age of 16 and still uses till today.

In 2006 he sets off to Crete (Greece) deejaying for five full months straight in every club that would have him, learning the craft and making his first ‘flight hours’. It was in Crete that he landed his first small hit, called F*ck Detroit. When returning home to the Netherlands, he was all fired up and started producing more and more tracks, determined to get his productions released on a label. With a little help from Sidney Samson and Laidback Luke, Digidance decides to give it a shot, and it worked; Afrojack - In Your Face scored #60 in the Dutch Top 100 and #3 in the Dutch dance Top 30. Not bad for the first release of an 18-year-old kid.

In 2007 Nick started performing under the name Afrojack, determined to make it to the top as a DJ and producer. Track after track and remix after remix followed. He even started his own label Wall Recordings. He was rarely seen outside of his studio. When he wasn’t deejaying, he was producing and these efforts slowly paid off. International deejays like Josh Wink, Dave Clarke, Laidback Luke, Fedde Le Grand, Marco V and Benny Rodrigues started giving his tracks the much-needed support.

In 2008 he hit the clubs with Math and Do My Dance and both tracks got picked up by every big name in the industry. Afrojack hooked up with the Partysquad to add vocals to Do My Danceand several weeks later, the Drop Down (Do My Dance) co-op mix was born. This track hit the Dutch top 20 and was crowned Tune of the Week by the biggest Dutch radio stations. Afrojack started making appearances at many important festivals like Mystery Land, Tomorrowland (Belgium), Extrema Outdoor and Sensation.

The world heard more and more of Afrojack in 2009 and it didn’t take long before David Guetta noticed Afrojack’s talent. They decided to meet up in the studio, which resulted in Toyfriend, a collaboration between the two and an Afrojack remix of Guetta’s track Sexy Bitch. Afrojack also played at David Guetta’s F*** Me I’m Famous events.

Befitting his position as the leading figure of the Dutch new wave, his success stretches far beyond his home turf. The year 2010 has seen him become one of the most in-demand DJ/producers of any nationality.

With a peerless reputation as a producer, his signature style is bringing him the kind of remix requests that most dance artists will only ever dream of, for example Lady Gaga’s Alejandro and Madonna’s Revolver.

Gig-wise, he’s rocked the world’s biggest floors including Pacha Ibiza, Miami Ultra Music Festival and Electric Daisy Carnival in LA.

Afrojack’s rise to fame as a producer has brought him a roll call of A-list champions – from Pete Tong to David Guetta, and Josh Wink to Fedde Le Grand, along the way collaborating with some of the world’s most respected producers and artists like David Guetta, Steve Aoki, Diplo, Kid Cudi, Pitbull and Black Eyed Peas.

His single, Take Over Control ft. Eva Simons became one of the hottest club anthems on the planet, not least in the UK where it’s been championed by Radio 1’s Annie Mac and Pete Tong. The track also hit No. 2mon Beatport and has already reached over one million views on YouTube.

In 2011 Afrojack was rewarded with the respectable Grammy award for the remix of Madonna’s Revolver in collaboration with David Guetta. The year got even better while he took a giant leap in the DJ Mag Top 100 to #7, after entering #19 the year before.

Respected by his colleague DJ’s for his production skills and loved by clubbers for his dancefloor bombs and energetic performances, Afrojack is setting new standards in the industry.

tyDi
BORN and raised on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast in Australia, tyDi has a background of classical theory and contemporary styles, as well as a university degree from the prestigious Conservatorium of Music.

“People ask me why I would bother studying when I’m already doing well in my field – but I believe knowledge is power, and it’s important for me to learn everything I can about sound and my passion in life. Music is powerful on so many levels, I want to learn, to know it inside and out,” tyDi says.

And learn he did – for two consecutive years tyDi was voted as Australia’s #1 DJ (Sony ITM DJ Poll), as well as being listed highly in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs of the world in both 2009 and 2010. An amazing achievement for someone so young, but this accolade was far from the end of the story.

The 23 year old attended the 2010 International Dance Music Awards in Miami where he was presented with the award for Best Breakthrough DJ of the world personally by international dance giant Tiesto. He is an internationally touring artist, performing frequently in Australia, Europe, Canada, the US and Asia. Since 2008 tyDi has headlined many of the world’s leading festivals to crowds as big as 40,000 at events such as Sensation, Global Gathering, Godskitchen and the Trance Energy Mainstage in Utrecht, Holland where he played to over 20,000 music lovers.

In late 2009 tyDi launched his own weekly worldwide radio show titled Global Soundsystem, which has become a successful international name in its own right. Broadcasted in over 20 different countries after just one year, the fast growing success of Global Soundsystem led to one of tyDi’s biggest surprises yet, he announced to his fans that superstar guests Sasha, Paul Oakenfold, Judge Jules, Sander Van Doorn and Markus Schulz would all be joining him to mix and host the 50th episode.

tyDi’s critically acclaimed debut artist album Look Closer hit the charts running where it went straight to the No. 2 spot on the Australian Dance albums chart, with individual tracks appearing several times in the number one spot on the Beatport downloads chart. In 2009 and 2010 tyDi mixed his own compilations for Ministry of Sound, which were both followed by a 16-date tour for his fans. tyDi’s career as a songwriter and producer took off when his first song Meet me in Kyoto was signed to the world’s #1 Dj Armin Van Buuren’s record label Armada Music at the age of 17. His releases such as You Walk Away, Vanilla, Calling, and Half Light have become international favorites in their genre and are featured on compilations worldwide including several albums from Armin Van Buuren and many of the world’s leading deejays.

In the remix world, tyDi is known for adding his unique twist to the music of the world’s best with a recent remix for BT’s The light in Things impressing so much that it led to the two of them working together on their own original collaborations. tyDi’s versatility is proven by his ability to produce soundtracks for hard hitting government advertising campaigns, video games, and luxury property developments.

It goes without saying that 2011 was a big year for tyDi. The prospective tours, collaborations and musical productions were endless. tyDi has become a brand synonymous with world-class dance music.

BOBBBY BURNS
Bobby started spinning tracks in 1996 and produced his first record in 2002, but it was in the summer of 2007 that everybody in Holland knew his name. His track From Holland became one of Holland’s biggest summer anthems of the year. We can easily say it was just the start of something big.

The success of Bobby’s track From Holland, made Afrojack notice his talent. Bobby and Afrojack decided to get together in the studio, which resulted in the releases of Ghettoblaster on Spinnin' Records. Ghettoblaster became the start of a long-term collaboration between Bobby and Afrojack.

Almost a year later, Bobby Burns is a solid part of Wall Recordings as he represents the more techy and underground sound of Afrojack’s label. For his releases on Wall Recordings, Bobby teamed up with label-owner Afrojack and Sidney Samson, resulting in four huge releases supported by David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Axwell and  Dada Life. In April 2010, Bobby Burns and Afrojack released their first Wall Recordings-collaboration Real High. Bobby and Afrojack continued their good work and a few months later they came up with a new collab called Bungee. The track rocked dancefloors all around the globe and Pete Tong picked the track as an Essential New Tune on his BBC1 radio show. Bobby’s latest work for Wall Recordings includes Countdown, collaboration with Sidney Samson (supported by Tiesto, Diplo and Laidback Luke) and another electrifying co-production with Afrojack; Bridge.

ANGGER DIMAS
Originating from Jakarta, 24-year-old Angger Dimas began his journey into dance music only five years ago, signing with Vicious Recordings in early 2009. His debut release Duck Army was played by the likes of Tocadisco, Joachim Garraud and Laidback Luke, instantly showcasing the Angger Dimas sound. Angger’s collaboration with Vandalism; She Got It brought massive international awareness and his remixes for the likes of Avicii, Afrojack, Richard Vission & Static Revenger, R3hab, Ian Carey, Oliver Twizt, Kaskade, Mind Electric, Tommie Sunshine, Amy Meredith, Tommy Trash, Sandro Silva and Havana Brown quickly followed and saw his star continue to rise.

Fast forward to 2012 and Angger already supported Steve Aoki’s DEADMEAT tour across North America & Canada and was been personally requested to perform alongside Laidback Luke, Wolfgang Gartner, Tiësto, Sandro Silva, R3hab, Diplo, Datsik, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Alex Metric at WMC 2012.  His first release for 2012 in March is called Release Me featuring the vocal talents of Polina (NYC).

Angger’s dj sets have wowed audiences across the world, including multiple tours of Australia & New Zealand in February 2010 supporting Avicii, November 2010, February 2011 supporting Oliver Twizt & Laidback Luke by personal invitation and again in November 2011 with Hardwell & Calvertron.

In September 2011 Angger toured USA playing together with Steve Aoki & Sidney Sampson in Los Vegas and played the epic Nocturnal Wonderland festival alongside the Bassjackers, Dirty South and Avicii and then co-headlined an ADE party in Amsterdam with Hardwell.

Angger supported Tiësto in Bangkok 2010 and they went on to co-produce the project Boys Will Be Boys, a 3-track EP. We Rock infused their unique sounds and reached Top 10 Beatport Electro House chart, gaining huge support internationally and also featured on Tiësto’s Clublife Mixed Album.

Other collaborations followed with Belgian trio Dimitri Vegas, Like Mike and Yves V Madagascar and with Steve Aoki Steve Jobs, which was placed on Steve’s 2012 Wonderland album.

New collaborations are already in place for 2012 with Tiësto, Bassjackers Ria”, Laidback Luke & Polina, backed up with more touring of Australia, Europe and the USA.  Angger’s debut album is set for release mid-2012. This is one guy who is putting Indonesia on the world’s musical stage like it has never been before.

WE LOVE TECHNO presents CARLOS FAURELLE
Supported by Terence C & XU

The electronic dance music scene produces a flood of talent by the minute, by the hour and by the day but few of these individuals shine through with a strong body of music quality like Carlos Fauvelle.

Inspired by counterparts Luciano, Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin and DJ Vibe and having worked closely with some of them throughout his career, Carlos is one of Portugal’s most exciting and talented music makers. Many a critic has slated Carlos to be the next big thing in house music from that part of the world.

Having moved to the sunny city of Barcelona in Spain two years ago, Carlos was inspired to focus on the music he wants to make and the sound he aims to represent. His discography is rich, with remixes done for folks like Tom Stephan, Chus & Ceballos, Dean Coleman, Hernan Cattaneo and Richie Santana, and studio collaborations laid down with DJ Vibe, Victor Calderone and Peter Bailey  all of whom have been given strong support by legends such as Danny Tenaglia, Roger Sanchez, Victor Calderone and Dubfire.

Continuing the excellent work with his current music label, Meridua, the creative genius doubles up and launches Inflagrante in 2011, promising a new record label that will present a fresh and eclectic flavor of electronic productions to music lovers globally. Breaking away from the conventional boundaries of the industry, where music is conveniently pigeon-holed into genres, and sounds are often recycled and reproduced, this new label allows Carlos to produce true and quality dance floor tunes, and will be a reflection of his music during his DJ sets – an epic journey of diverse and interesting musical elements.

Having graced consoles and rocked floors at clubs back home in Portugal and around the world, like Zouk in Singapore, Pacha in NYC, Womb in Tokyo, Space in Miami, Rex in Paris and Circus in Montreal, Carlos Fauvrelle drops the right beats and allows his brilliant DJ sets to combine the marathon-like traditions of the New York’s house music scene with a modern touch and taste of Europe’s current tech-house wave.

Marrying old music influences with new ideas, Carlos Fauvrelle http://www.carlosfauvrelle.com is a true master of the dance music craft and a name to look out for at present, and in the near future.

FIRED UP FRIDAYS ft FONO vs SIMON LEE & ALVIN

FONO is locally recognized as one of the most sought after progressive trance DJs in Kuala Lumpur, garnering a sizeable and still growing fan base over the past nine years. Emerging into the scene as the Champion of the Heineken’s Found@Thirst DJ competition in 2003, he was first given the international spotlight for performing alongside Paul Oakenfold in KL and Tokyo.

Spotted for his impressive performances, Fono took big leaps into holding a residency in Zouk Kuala Lumpur in 2004. He was regularly seen taking on the main stage alongside renowned trance heavyweights such as Ferry Corsten, Marco V, Armin Van Buuren, Cosmic Gate, Markus Schulz, Above & Beyond, Judge Jules, Eddie Halliwell and Paul Van Dyk.

Complete with a vast experience of deejaying in major outdoor dance festivals in Malaysia as well as clubs in Taipei, Bangkok, Jakarta and Singapore, Fono has also showcased his musical flair in one of Europe’s most sought after dance festivals, the 2006 Berlin Love Parade.

With his increasing popularity in the local club scene, he was voted the Best Local Club DJ of 2005 by the readers.. Throughout 2009, the immense response to his euphoric trance night, Fired Up Fridays at Zouk KL and his frequent appearance in major dance events such as Revelation, Freedom & the upcoming Massive at Sepang has proved that Fono continues to be the most exciting and anticipated talent to watch out for in 2011.
SIMON LEE & ALVIN are a DJ duo from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Formed in 2007, they class their music as high energy trance with bits of electro and progressive influence.

Their many exclusive cuts and crafty bootlegs have been supported and used as dance floor secret weapons by international and local top DJs.

TWILIGHT ACTIONGIRL / THE SEXINVADERS

THE Sexinvaders started five years ago without any idea of a mission. They were just having fun. And that’s exactly what you get when they are on stage. Positive tensions characterise their dj sets. From wicked electro tunes via techno to house everything finds its place in the action.

Barcelona, Turin, Istanbul and Bangkok are on top of their tour plan. Even if they can’t show up in person, you can listen to their music played by others - Radio FM4 Vienna, Flux FM Berlin and BBC Radio1 London. Malente, Mr. Flash and Kissy Sell Out play the Berlin boys’ tracks on their sets.

In October 2011 they completed the 5 Years The Sexinvaders Tour successfully. Besides new releases in 2012 massive touring will appear on the agenda again. Even after five common years they did not lose their motivation and freshness.

It looks like 2012 is not going to be a year with a mission but a successful year for The Sexinvaders!

STRADDLING the fine line between underground darling and big room, big tune dance floor arsonist, Timo Garcia’s numerous releases on the circuit's biggest and best labels have been well documented as he currently sits pretty at #323 in the latest global Top 1000 DJ poll. (Aug 1, 2011).

In a world when DJs and producers are ten-a-penny and the hype machines peddle mediocrity as if it were something special, it can be difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. As such, the currency de jour is consistency and recommendations.

Timo’s consistency in the studio has culminated in Wonderlust Bug; his acclaimed debut artiste album with some of the world’s biggest names like Sasha, Laurent Garnier, Timo Mass and M.A.N.D.Y. queuing up to recommend it.

Timo’s latest release on Sharam’s Yoshitoshi imprint recently graced the Beatport Top 10 Tech charts for over five months with many world class DJs citing it in their personal Top 10’s. Defected meanwhile featured it on their In The House Brazil ’11 compilation.

The year 2010 also saw the release of a double CD, littered with remixes from Timo’s album tracks by production heavyweights that include DJ Pierre, Onionz, Eric Kupper and James Harcourt. It is a testament to Timo’s calibre that such big names are ready to remix his work and is a pleasant shift from him doing the remixing. His deft touch can be heard on remixes of such luminaries as Leftfield, Justice, DJ Pierre, Louis Vega, Robert Owens, Coldcut, Danny Howells and Ian Brown. He is constantly on the lookout for ways to add his inimitable sound to wide-ranging projects including a 15-track ambient album under his new T Mo guise.

His infamy has spread among the label bosses who set the trends and create the future-heroes of our world. Yoshitoshi, OFF Recordings, Skint, Southern Fried, 303 Lovers, Nervous, Audio Therapy, Dieb Audio, Cr2 & Toolroom are just some of the world-famous imprints who have clamoured to get a piece of Timo’s brilliance. And his recent collaborations with Jerome Sydenham, X-Press 2 and DJ Pierre all see their global release in 2011 too.

It seems incredible that Timo still has time to deejay around the world as well as working behind the scenes engineering and mixing down many other artistes’ projects in his North London studio. Last summer saw him play the main stage at London’s biggest dance music festival South West Four as well as headlining festival stages from Brazil to India; but this is a man who has both a dedication and a love for his craft and this is something that he exudes, whether behind the decks or in the studio.
